The 3rd annual Jones Cup Junior Invitational, following in the footsteps of the Jones Cup Invitational, will be held December 18-20, 2011 on the Seaside Course at Sea Island Golf Club.

The Jones Cup Junior Invitational will feature the nation’s top male junior golfers ages 15-18. The winner of the 54-hole stroke play competition will receive an exemption to participate in the heralded Jones Cup Invitational to be contested at Ocean Forest February 2-5, 2012.

Invitations for the Jones Cup Junior Invitational will be mailed in September and are based on Polo Golf Rankings, Junior Golf Scoreboard Rankings and the Golfweek/Sagarin Junior Rankings.

The Jones Cup Junior Invitational is a Junior Golf Scoreboard, Golfweek, and AJGA ranked event.

 

In the third annual Jones Cup Junior Invitational, Matt Nesmith of North Augusta, South Carolina grabbed and controlled the lead in one of the deepest fields in junior golf with scores of 69-69-70 on the historic Tom Fazio re-designed Sea Island Seaside course.

Weather conditions in the first round were not quite desirable with cooler north winds ripping across the links style layout rendering low scoring virtually impossible. As the tournament moved forward into the final two rounds, conditions were absolutely ideal, but Nesmith’s consistent and steady play was unbeatable. Worth noting, Nesmith finished runner up in the 2010 event only one stroke off the lead.

All in all 24 different states were represented as well as three foreign countries in this year's event. A victory in the Jones Cup Junior earns an exemption into the highly heralded 2012 Jones Cup held at Ocean Forest Golf Club. We wish Matt and the rest of the field all the best and look forward to another highly competitive event next year.
